Streetscape design of the West area

The urban design solution, the first phase of which is completed, allowed for the creation of a new public garden between Rua Pedro da Fonseca and the railway station with an area of approximately 5.000 sq.m. The attractive railway buildings, which are to be preserved, will acquire some prominence, as will the steelworks chimneys and the future viaduct, designed as an element to characterise the urban space and not merely as a road structure.
In the second phase of the project, and once the viaduct is built, there will be a cycle route between the area to north and south of the railway line, and overall improvement of access to Bairro do Barrocal. This new connection definitively replaces the possibility of extending Avenida Nuno Álvares, thus preserving the old railway station and the urban ambience of this avenue.
