Luz Hospital is one of the biggest Lisbon health complexes. It is built close to the Benfica Stadium and Colombo Shopping Mall. Its limits are defined by important roads, which are leading to the north exits of the city.
The small plot of land settled the compactness of the building. A one-way road cuts the complex in the two main areas: hospital and senior apartments.
The hospital has 193 rooms and the Senior Apartments have 118 flats.
The hospital’s H shape and the Senior Apartments’ rectangular shape allowed introducing gardens inside the plot. Thus, natural light was the main element of design.
The health complex has a clear spatial and programmatic distribution. The inner circulation net gives order and relates the several facilities of the complex, which contributes for an easy orientation for the users. The circulations are thought to separate patients from the general users – the main purpose is to give privacy, comfort and confidentiality to the internal and ambulatory patients.
The subway tunnels, which are crossing the building emplacement, established the use of rubber supports between the foundations and the building structure.
The Luz Hospital Design was awarded the 2007 Valmor Prize.
