The planned intervention zone, which is known as the Matinha area, is located to the south of the Parque das Nações, between the railway (Northern Line) and the River Tejo.
Throughout the last century Matinha was home to a very heterogeneous urban occupation, with a mixture of heavy industry (of which four large gasometers still remain), warehouses, and residential housing.
One of the key objectives of the Matinha Detailed Development Plan is to ensure that there is a continuity between the city and the Tejo Estuary.
The main road axes are the North/South Route (a new avenue which carries on from the Alameda dos Oceanos and will provide the link to the development called Renzo Piano to the south), and the East/West Route (which will cross the railway and connect up to the extension of the Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América). Together they will link the intervention zone to the rest of the city.
The main elements in the environmental upgrade and the characterisation of the public areas are the Park and the Waterfront Walk. The Park is the real heart of the proposal and will have a relationship with the Estuary unlike that of any other green space in Lisbon. It will provide a framework and new functions for three of the existing gasometers, and will also make it possible to create articulations with the built-up area by merging all the different green spaces into a single, hierarchically ordered green structure.
The Waterfront Walk will be an extension to the south of the existing public areas in the Parque das Nações. It may also be that the existing Port of Lisbon Administration (APL) buildings will be converted for leisure use, thereby bringing new life to the area both during the day and at night.
Our proposal also includes the design of a number of residential city blocks and apartment buildings, including retail and services spaces, the definition of the areas containing the various public facilities, and the design of the site of the future Lisbon Cathedral.
The structural dimensions proposed in the plan seek to take maximum advantage of the views across the estuary, both from actual vantage points, and from the various terraces, patios, verandas and projected volumes.
