Quimiparque Masterplan

The plan area, around 500 hectares, includes the site of the former chemical/industrial complex of Companhia União Fabril and the surrounding areas needed to assimilate the new urban zone into the existing city, namely the railway manoeuvring and workshops complex that currently divides Barreiro in two.
The proposal contains a solid system of public spaces that form the backbone of the new city as well as the existing city , where urban corridors and spaces on a scale appropriate to its density are a scarcity.
The intention to transform existing elements is bold and collectively accepted by Barreiro residents, who demand great realism in implementing this historical turnaround. The third crossing of the River Tagus and the Metro light railway on the south bank of the Tagus are key elements of this turnaround, as they will provide a new means of linking up with the rest of the Lisbon metropolitan area.
The proposed new city is organised around three central spaces: the new station, the existing Atlantic port and the site of the current river ferry terminal. The preservation and development of the industrial/logistics component that already existed is recommended for this area to the west of the third Tagus bridge, taking advantage of the municipality’s industrial tradition and the new transport infrastructures scheduled for the area.
