Almada Building

A housing and retail building located in the consolidated part of Almada.
The retail spaces are scattered about the inside of the block, around a semi-public square (which is under security surveillance and is closed at night) that is designed like a widening of the street.
The housing units are laid out in a left/right design, which is organised on the basis of a structural module that makes it possible to combine a total of nineteen 2 and 3-room apartments. Different apartments were laid out at each end of the lot.
The living rooms and kitchens face the street (towards the north/east), while the bedrooms look out over the inside of the block (south/west exposure), which is the quietest area.
The design of the façades took account of both the way the sun hits the buildings and the functional specifications; the north/east façade contains vertical windows; the south/west façade is made up with horizontal windows that stretch along the whole length of the building.
